In a way, bumping this thread back up...

But, to answer an earlier question - yes, the spark plugs are Metric. They are Champion W16Y plugs.

Does this shed any additional light on whether this is a '29 Speedster engine or not? thanks so much, Wes

Yes, I purchased that car (in Pittsburgh, where I live) for a very, very reasonable sum and in fact have already made-back more than 50% of my purchase price by selling the Holbrook alloy "convertible coupe" body and the miscellaneous Lincoln and RR fenders and grill.

I am left with what appears to be a '26 chassis, '29 running gear, diff and wheels and of course, the engine in question.

I've been considering a rebody (full custom), but may also sell, hence the desire to confirm the provenance of the actual engine.

I am aware of the discrepancy in the PDF as posted on this website.

So, let's get down to the business of determining the engine numbering sequence for 6th series Speedsters.

Thank you so much for any help. -Wes

Hello,

I have a Packard 8-cylinder engine complete. Photo attached.

The engine number is #167004

I reviewed your helpful PDF and trying to discern if it is a standard production engine or if a speedster (6th series). Perhaps I'm not reading the PDF properly.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this. (also, please make no reference to the sheet tin/rad in the photo - that body (non-Packard)has long since been sold off). Thanks!

-Wes

ahhhh...thanks for setting me straight! What I was referring to earlier re: GMC truck valves earlier was that IIRC. The forum I was reading was referring to thinner valve stems while retaining the same nominal surface area of the valve itself.

re: head size, fortunately I have a VGC 327 Thunderbolt head and a 288. I may be now swayed to go with the Thunderbolt.

decisions, decisions...but the time is getting near to start the engine build.

This is an interesting point you bring up 327 v 288 head. I was always under the impression that the 288 head mounted to the 327 block was the better performance option since the 288 offered higher compression and then all you had to do was porting/polishing of the bowls/chambers. What I state seems to be widely published on the web forums.

Are you saying that because of my election to supercharge the engine, I'd benefit from the lower compression of the 327 head? again, assuming I am able to optimize the bowls/chambers of the 288 head to be as good or better than what is in the 327. w-

Much appreciated! Precisely the reason I wanted to become part of this forum. I think I was getting a little overzealous (in particular, re: valves) over on forums like H.A.M.B.!!

Update: it is a 1969 Impala 12-bolt rear end. It has a final drive ratio of 2.73

Yes, I'm familiar...I bought (the body sectioning was already done by the gent I purchased from) and started my project and while I was doing Motto-Trevoux research, I stumbled across Ross's photos.

The funny thing is, Ross and I only live a couple hundred miles from one another. When done, my wife wants me to arrange a "play date" for the two. -wp

Thanks Ross. I really didn't think of that (final drive ratio). I am going custom in that department as well - let me get back to you - but I'm pretty sure it's a looong final drive. It's a late 60's Impala 12-bolt rear-end. I'm building this car for mid-range power as a highway cruiser - I have sports cars for the back roads!

Again, the rods look to be in great shape and the pins and bearings were all nice and smooth with no real wear that I could see. Perhaps the idea of just cleaning them up to get the hard edges of the castings is a good start.

I bought the car as a stalled project from someone in New Mexico who had partially built up the car for the Carrera recreation in Mexico.

BTW - I'm glad you replied (I've been a lurker here for about a year and I know your rep.). I had a chance to get your attention at Hershey a couple years back next to Ralph's speedster, but I got sidetracked. Promise - I'm not a stalker!

I've wanted to do this project for about five years now and when I did some further digging after I bought the car from NM, I saw your car...I hope we can get them together someday - I'm in Pittsburgh and my folks live closer to Central PA.

best- Wes
