Packard jet engine test facility.

Reading about Packard's jet engine development program in the late 40s, I saw a mention of the company having a test facility at Willow Run. At one time, I found a very poor quality photograph of the facility.

While at the air show at Willow Run, I noticed a brick building with what looked to be late 30s or 40s architecture, which looked a lot like that photo of Packard's facility that I saw a few years ago.

Doing a bit of digging, I found this building is the former Packard hanger, and it still designated on Willow Run's current tenant list as the "Packard hanger".

The windows in the office section are all blocked off now, and the control tower that used to be on top of the office section is gone, but this is how it appears today.

Several: Packards, Scarabs, Corvairs, Isettas, a fabulous Fiat 500 Jolly, but the best pic is personally important: at the dawn of time, my Aunt took a pic of me at the wheel of her 50 Plymouth. At the show was a 50 Plymouth, same color and with the same optional windshield visor. With the owner's permission and assistance, I recreated that pic form 1955.

...and I took the opportunity to return the guide booklet for the lodge that I had mistakenly scampered off with when I went to the open house in 2014.

To the members of this board who also work at PPG, thanks for a great show, and a special thanks to the powers that be that decided to obtain the neighboring lot for additional parking.

Any idea when the tour in the video was made? I was under the impression a sizeable amount had been spent in cleanup but the debris on the floors and grounds look like it might have been a "before" tour.

There are a couple shots of a tree that is in fall color. I think the exterior debris cleanup was only around the admin building. It looks like the tour went through the offices in the admin building, with rubble on the floor.

This pic was posted last June, showing the office space cleaned up, so that tour could have been fall 2015.

Adding to the B-29 confusion, B-29 nose sections were built at the Graham Paige plant on W Warren, which was being run by Chrysler during the war.

A bit late to the thread, but regarding B-29s and Willow Run, I have been following events at the remaining section of the plant which is being converted to a new home for the Yankee Air Museum. Apparently, the Willow Run plant was designed to be big enough to build the 29, then in development, but, rather than disrupt production, it was decided to continue with the 24 as it was adequate for the job in Europe.

As part of the Yankee Air Museum's Historical Presentation series, Joel Stone, Senior Curator at the Detroit Historical Society, will give a talk on Albert Kahn April 5th at 7:30PM. Event is free, but donations are welcome.
