47 loom layout

I'm wondering if anyone has a more or less original 47 senior that might still have the wiring loom in the engine compartment as the factory laid it out.

Looking thru several photos, the looms have been repaired so question I have is if the looms were unclamped when repaired and left that way or did Packard just leave everything going to the sides unclamped to angle off in their respective directions unsupported and able to vibrate. I would have thought they would have neatly laid the sections out and tucked things in toward the firewall with maybe a clamp or two in spots to the sides but even in the photos that might still be untouched it is unclear. Only consistent clamp is in the part that goes straight down.

I'm putting my new loom in and would like to attempt what Packard did with clamps in appropriate spots if they were used.

Howard, as I recall there are no wiring loom clamps in the engine compartment. The loom enters/exits through a hole in the cowl wall and covered with a spoon-shaped metal retainer. The loom is then routed down to the starter area and on the LH side of the engine compartment on the upper edge of the splash shield just below the hood ledge above the battery. There are two or three retainers on the horizontal bracket in front of the radiator where the wires for the front RH lights are routed. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the photos. Must say I had never really paid attention to that loom detail and this one had been out so long the memory had failed. Really am surprised Packard didn't have a few more clamps instead of just letting it hang in the air in a couple of spots close to linkages.

A great help. That one does have a clamp right by the coil and OD relay where I was concerned about loom dropping into linkage and another for the lower section heading to the starter.

My 48 has a clamp by the overdrive relay( the relay is missing ) and two under the left fender lip for the cables running to the front.

Thanks again for the photos. Found some appropriate clamps and took care of those two sections by the linkage. One other question is what happens to the loom once it gets past the horn bracket and relay. Length I have makes it appear to go in front of the bracket with two wires catching the relay. Was there another clamp to hold the two more wires that cut across continuing on to the carb switch? That section looks very vulnerable to heat or even falling down across the manifold.

Howard, the wires to the horn relay and the carb switch on my Clipper were not clamped except on the carb switch itself. Never a problem for me, but another Clipper Custom was prevented from joining us on a Salado Early Bird Tour one meet because the wires were burned by the exhaust manifold. Some of the engine compartment wiring on my Clipper had been redone so can not vouch for its being same as original. The heft of the wiring loom seems not to need too much clamping to keep it in place.
