For a clean rebuilt 1937 320 super 8 what's the best oil to use.

I would use Shell Rotella 15W-40. Others here may offer advice based on their experience.

For a freshly rebuilt engine, I'd say detergent to keep it clean. Non-detergent is for when there is concern with loosinging old build-up and plugging passages.

While the original recommendation is for straight viscosity oil, that's only because multi-vis wasn't a choice back then.

For a comprehensively rebuilt fresh engine I'd want something little less resistant to flow than a 15W-40. Were it mine I'd initially use a high grade SAE 30 heavy duty detergent oil for the first 300-500 miles, and change it at that interval or a bit sooner.

To tell the truth, I've found that Shell Rotella is what I start after a rebuild and then Mobil 1 (10w30). The Mobil 1 seems to make the engine spin easier (quite a feat with 9 main bearings).

For a fresh rebuild, I would give Royal Purple a call and see what they would say. I know their oil cost but a rebuild is much more experience. I also know they have a special break in oil and I would think they would know what's best.
Just my two cents.

For break in I would use a 10W or 10W30 detergent oil, maybe even 5W30. The factories always used light oil for break in. Change after 500 or 1000 miles then 10W30 for the next 2000 or 3000 miles. Only then would I got to a synthetic, once the rings are seated and everything broken in.
