Adjust Idle Speed 1953 327 4-barrel carb

Dear Folks,

In trying to understand the "hard shift into reverse" on my ultramatic, I was advised to adjust the idle speed.

So I tried it "by ear".

Then I went and bought a multimeter that could read engine RPM.

It seems like I couldn't get the idle speed down below 700 RPM even when shifted into High.

In fact, the idle-speed screw isn't even contacting anymore.

Perhaps there is something else going wrong:

High idle maladjusted/stuck?

Idle mixture adjustments out-of-whack?

What should I check first.

I don't seem to sense the car going out of "high idle", but I don't know how to force the issue, there.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Update:

I found the instruction sheet for the 4 bbl carbuerator.

It turns out that what I thought was the idle speed adjusting screw is actually the fast idle adjusting screw.

So I will have a crack at that as soon as I get a chance!

Gosh - that idle screw is in a hard place to get to!

Thanks again for this forum.
