I've often wondered what the "strap" feature on that piece was for. I'm fairly certain it's not to hold the top down. I'll ask around.

... or perhaps it is, based on this photo. BUT ... this car is a complete fake, the top does not lay down the way it is supposed to, and I wouldn't rule out the possibility that whoever put those straps on there just assumed that's the way it was supposed to be. I have NEVER seen straps on any other 1930 Packard roadster.

I'm not saying I know anything about '30 boatails, tho in the '70s I had a great ride in one owned by Julian Eccles of Klamath Falls. I have leather straps to hold the top down. The straps and chrome guides are in the Parts book. I can tell you what happens without them, even when folded correctly. The wind catches the folded top material and billows it out over the trunk.

Not a boat tail, but similar use of the rubber pads.

Interesting. Possibly the straps are used when the top boot is not being used.

I'm sorry to say that my wife is loosing her battle with ovarian cancer. I have been by her side for the past three weeks... at first still encouraged. This project is dedicated to Sherri, my soul mate. I know she would have loved cruising around in the boat tail speedster more than any of the other cars I have done.
The opportunity to document my progress on this site has been part of my daily distraction and therapy. I'll be back at it to finish this most important car the "Sherri Ann".

Hyman also has this one, but it left the factory as a Victoria coupe.

I got back at it last weekend after being away from it for more than 2 months. The right rear fender is tacked together... I will weld it up when I get back from the 2 week vacation I'm taking starting today.
