Mistake people seem to make in recent years is trying to use vat-dyed leather rather than color-coated leather. The two types have a very different look and feel. Original stuff was NOT vat-dyed and gave a plusher, thicker look and feel. In the end, what you do is to locate a commercial automotive leather supplier and simply have the (non-vat-dyed) leather tinted the right shade to meet your needs. Not cheap, but that's how you do it.
