The Napa 1076 is a wix 51076 with a Napa box. The whole Napa gold line is Wix. Both came with a rubber gasket that fits the canister, and several other gaskets for different applications.

Worked on the steering gear tonight. Checked the three adjustment points discussed in the manual, and all checked out. I did find that my leak seemed to be originating from the steering column cover on the box, vice the cross shaft seal. I decided, after going through the servicing procedure in the manual, to pull the cross shaft for inspection and to ease installation of the new seal. All looked well, some very minor putting about 2" above the seating surface. Maybe a very light tick from the bearings on the cross shaft, but the gear feels tight (no slop) and rolls easily.

1. Can the steering column cover on the steering gear be removed without pulling the horn wire? I'm hoping to sneak in a little gasket shellac vice pulling that part of the box apart.

2. Any pre-lube required when re-assembling the cross shaft? Understand I need to wrap the splines on the cross shaft when I re-assemble so I don't damage my new oil seal.

Any other tips or things to look for prior to reassembly?

I will also need to buy some gasket paper and make a gasket for the cross shaft cover. Mine disintegrated when I took the cover off. (I'm sure I could buy one but then I couldn't drive the car this weekend)

I also saw in the '37 manual that it gives a test for movement of the front wheels when disconnected from the steering gear (no more than 45 lbs pull) so I'll check that tomorrow night too. Interesting that test is not in the '38 manual that I keep in the shop.

Ken, if yours is anything like my 47 you will have to remove the Horn Button wire to just take the steering Wheel off.

Wesley, thanks! That's a great picture!

Mine is a bit simpler - horn button, copper ring, spring, nut, and steering wheel. The copper ring sits in the horn button. I think it's supposed to be a slight interference fit, but my horn button is a little worn. When I re-wired the horn, I put a connection in about 2" from the horn button so I didn't have to pull the entire wire to pull the steering wheel. I found last night that if I push that too far down, turning the steering wheel will cause the horn to blow intermittently. By simply pulling the wire up slightly and then re-assembling the horn button, problem solved.

Oh, I forgot to mention, Howard did an excellent work labeling and adding a few extra notes to that picture.

Edit: nvm, just found the second seal in the cross-section in the owner's manual.

The link to the film supplement is correct, but you are right, it does not come up so the file must be somehow corrupted. Perhaps Big Kev can fix it if he sees this post.

The film supplements have a lot of good information and can be found on line 59 under Packard Service Letters, Counselors and Bulletins.
