I had not thought of that but it would make a lot of sense. Maybe the template Mike is sending to me will show that.

The shelf that my 1940s had was plywood but coated and sealed black in some protective material like creosote but without the smell.

One piece of plywood, painted black, with a rubber mat as shown. Let me know if you need more pictures.

I believe that Exterior and Marine plywood use the same glue, but that Marine is supposed to be free of voids in the layers (in actuality it has fewer but not zero in the inner layers).

These pictures are wonderful and I don't think I need anything else. I now have a plan in place to construct my shelf. Thanks to everyone for your help.

Roger, any good auto trim shop should be able to provide you with material for a rubber mat, or cut one for you.

Thanks and now that I am getting a template from Mike in Tucson, obtaining the rubber mat should be a breeze.
Thanks to everyone for your help.

Hi. Yes, I have looked that there are multiple locations nearby where I can obtain Baltic Birch plywood, but my question now is what is the "correct thickness?" I can get it in either 1/2" or 3/4". The pictures send earlier appear to show something in the 3/4" range. What does your documentation show?
Thanks, again and again.

1/2" plywood.

I also noticed when I was measuring it this morning that the back edge is rounded. I hadn't noticed that little detail before. You can see the rounding in the first picture I posted previously. If you need a closer picture showing the profile, just let me know.

Thanks, Ken. Now, when you say "rounded", do you mean that the corners are rounded off and not square or is the edge on the top and bottom of the piece rounded to prevent snags somewhere? What I mean by that is if you look at the piece from one of the ends you would see the back edge appearing to be more of less a semi-circle. I hope I've explained this sufficiently.
