Roger - the latter. The edge of the plywood has a rounded profile in the vertical dimension, along the edge. It measures as semi-circular, so 1/4" radius on a 1/2" thick shelf. The back edge of the shelf is straight along the width of the trunk.

In order to get a nice rounded edge on the plywood, I would suggest gluing (Water proof glue e.g. Titebond III) a piece of solid wood on to the plywood. There are several ways to round the edge 1) sandpaper (tedious), 2) hand plane + sandpaper or 3) router with 1/4" corner round bit.

Good Morning...When attempting a finished end on plywood, most find that using a piece of half round from the lumber store and attaching it with waterproof glue and long finishing nails in predrilled holes works really good.

Lots of good wood working advice! Not sure how Packard did it, but the edge is just plywood.

Yes, a lot of very good woodworking advice and my hearty thanks to you all. I shall proceed along those lines when I get my template and am able to continue with this piece.
