Long time ago Owen mentioned Iceland while talking about official state cars.

Today I found a notice in an older newspaper, reporting on another state carriage, located in that country but this time an impressive 1942.

One of the captions contains an interesting background story:

"This car has recently been restored and is occasionally used by the President of Iceland. A Packard was given to the President of Iceland by FDR, but the ship carrying that one to Iceland was torpedoed and that car was lost. So Iceland just bought another one."

Gerd, thanks for posting these links. I have thought that the '41 Packards (non Clipper) were more attractive than their '42 counterparts. But I am beginning to like the horizontal grille bars on the '42s. An acquired taste, like Scotch.

I was in Iceland twice this summer, on my way to and from London Heathrow. As far as I could tell it is a cold, gray rock in the north Atlantic. It was late August and it was like Michigan is now, minus the snow.

MrPB, You have volcanoes in Michigan or is it just that the Rouge plant smoke makes it appear that way?

Two things:
1. The first Packard being shipped to Iceland, if I remember correctly, was a LeBaron limousine.

2. If I was to restore a senior 1942 Packard and was forced to use the wrong hub caps (and most are forced to because they are unavailable), I think I'd opt for the 1941 180 hub caps vs the ones that were put on this car. At least the 1941 hub caps would look correct when viewing the car in profile.

Morning all,

Our own President Of Ireland, Eamonn Valera, born New York City 1883, preferred American cars for his own personal transportation.

The State car was/is a Rolls-Royce with a body by Hooper & Son Coachbuilders of London. However, de Valera did not want to copy the British Royals in his personal life so the he aquired a Packard.

I do not know which model it was, but along with the Bishop of Galway, they were the only notable Packard owners I know of in Ireland. (apart from myself, of course!)
