In theory the shift motors can be removed by shoving the trans sideways. In practice its hit and miss depending on how far the engine has sagged rearward into the X. I now shorten the shafts slightly as a matter of course. There is still more than enough support for the shift motor.

Might also depend on senior vs jr models. On my 56 Executive i had to remove tail shaft housing and exhaust and power unit would still not come off. IIRC i had to loosen the right motor mount to allow the engine to either lift slightly to the right or some issue like that. It was 4 years ago.

At the time it did not occur to me to cut a little off of the shaft but IIRC 1/8 inch from end of shaft in my case would have been plenty to allow clearence to remove the power unit.

Ok....trans back in...

On to oil pump... Got the length for shaft.

Going to get the pressed oil screen..that bolt on ..don't think you can adjust..

Pumps are same height...so looks like. Mellon screen will sit about 3/4 inch higher in oil pan.. Out of the yuck..

Had to heat up screen..both ends to square it up.

Not shaft I am using..made it to short.
For the plate I am using ..shaft is 7-5/8 long.

I might make another plate 3/4 thick. After Blanched.. About 5/8s..
Thick..will give more area for bolts..heads..I had to machine top of hex heads..for plate..I am using..

Test fit oil pump.

Pan goes on. no problem..but those trans oil lines..getting way.

Think oil pump shaft is a tad long. Don't want dist rotor to go to high.

When putting the pan up with the engine in the car, gravity not a problem if you affix the gasket to the pan and not the block, I suspect that's how most everyone does it. I use non-hardening Permatex between the gasket and the pan, and then just a light film of grease on the block surfaces.

Dave.

I wanted to make sure that those end tabs on gasket. Fit in main bearing groove..and the timing cover groove.

The main and timing gaskets fit on top of them..

Which makes the seal..at corners..ends...
