I just wanted to link this here for future use since I'm getting ready to replace the water pump, hoses and fan belt.

I just received my new water pump, it's nice and tight not like the old one. I notice when I was removing the old pump it only had 3 lock washers on the four bolts and as I was taking the back plate off I found a copper washer in one of the holes, so I'm guess that copper washer is a gasket washer to keep water from leaking out. And also should I use some kind of sealant in the holes that were leaking water as I removed the bolts, what kind of thread sealer should I use?
Thanks again for all the help.
Wes

After a review of the parts book it looks like two copper washers and two lock washers. The copper washers look like they go in the
holes that are recessed.

I coat the bolt threads that enter the water jacket with a hardening gasket paste, or gasket shellac.

Yes, the bolt holes with the machined recesses should use the copper washers since these holes go through to the water jacket.

Wes

The brass washers can be found in the plumbing department of a well equipped hardware store.

Well this is what the backing plate on the inside of the water pump looks like after it had sat for many years with old anti-freeze left in.

Wes, keep in mind that there are different length bolts. You want to make sure that they go in the right place; otherwise, there is a chance of screwing into the casting and cracking the block.
