Can the gearshift parts be removed without removing the steering column itself?? I seen where you had some videos on You Tube, Wes.

I would say it is possible but I wouldn't try it. The hardest part would be driving out the pin out of the SELECTOR (3.316). And mine was so gummed upped, I had the hardest time getting the SHAFT LEVERs off (3.328 & 3.329).

Well I did it again, I figure I would just pull the two IDLER LEVER To THE TRANSMISSION (Rod) and inspect the pivot points at the transmission for wear. The farthest one back came off pretty easy and seems like a tight fit. So I'm saying that one is good. Now the next one was a little difficult to remove. It turns out it has a rubber bushing that I pulled apart. None listed in Max Merritt nor Kanter, so the search goes on.

The rubber bushing is interesting. Packard had a lot of issues with them as a cause for the lockup and lost shift motion issues -- to the point of issuing service kits in 41 to replace them with the steel types.

Here is part of another service article on gear shift issues which was published in 45 advising removal of rubber bushings at the trans levers. Wonder why if they advised removing them in 45 you found one on your car. Could it be they changed the rubber formulation and started using them again or could it be work was done and a dealership had some old stock and put one back in. Am almost positive my car has all steel and was only missing the one bushing I had to make..

Well tonight I figured I would tie up a couple of loose ends.

As always, a BIG THANKS goes out to Howard, I don't know where we would be without him. Yes I do LOST! So THANKS again!

Dell, it looks like I could use a TAIL AND STOP SOCKET, I tried my best but couldn't get them freed up. So PM me and let me know.

PTV, the photo shows how far I got before I gave up and pulled the whole column out. I was working away from home and didn't have a punch or hammer at the time, so I just took it all out. Plus when the spring popped out the end I think I lost the plug that goes in the end between the cotter pin and spring. If it had one?

Almost got everything cleaned up, so getting ready to put it all back together.

I can tell how much progress I've made or haven't made by looking at how far down the list of other Blogs my Blog is. So it looks like I need to get busy. For what turned out to be, why my shift levers didn't look correct to what appears to be an overhaul of the Shifting Assy. Well after this, it should be good for the rest of the time I own it.

Got the Shift Shaft back together, everything nice and smooth. Still need to clean up the Steering Column. Had to make another divider for the firewall. I'll scan a picture later after I get it cut, so if anyone else needs to make one they will already have a pattern. I'm using Black Sintra 12" X 24" X 3MM (0.118") Foam Boards, that I got from Amazon, Howard was the one who told me about it. So that's the latest update, hope everybody is doing well and staying well.
And Mark what do I owe you, those washer look great. Thanks Again!

ptv. They are the 3.3305 bushings in the first picture. Used in different location in the linkage.
