I could but then I lose that lip at the end that helps clamp the hose on.

Not quite a drop in it would appear. I figured the height would be noticeable but Is the Packard hose large enough that it will slide down and clamp on the lower portion of the outlet to keep the basic look of the original? Let the extra length be hidden in the hose?

If the bolt spacing is off it may take something more more like a milling clamp or rigid non flexing short drill setup to keep the holes spaced differently as the new dimension is drilled. Just enlarging the holes to make it fit might require a fairly large hole -- but looks like there is enough material on the pad to be able to do what is necessary.

Only other thing I see offhand preventing it being a good replacement is something that might cause a problem for those few with AC and have a bracket that mounts over the outlet. The height of the pad is different. Maybe not as much an issue with aftermarket brackets but the factory bracket is fairly precise on the hole dimensions. The extra height will probably tilt bracket enough to mess with the bolts threading in and particularly those on the head side.

do you have access to a lathe?,

that looks pretty thick, you could cut it down, then cut a lip, don't need much of a lip,

I do not have access to a lathe nor have I touched one in 30 years.

Here is a picture that KevinAZ sent to me some time ago of his restoration. Looking it it I don't think that extra inch and half is going to make much difference.

I can cut the hose down if I had to.

Back to the water inlet.
I'm sure that the Dodge inlet that I was told would fit my engine actually did fit that persons engine. As I am sure that the multiple manufacturer make them slightly different. Slotted holes would have been enough to make it bolt right in. Mine did not have slotted holes but I removed enough to make it fit. However the opening between the two is a half inch difference in diameter. I am concerned that there isn't enough contact between the two parts due to the size difference. At the bolt ends there is plenty of contact but on the sides there might be 1/8th of an inch at most of contact between the two. Should I be concerned?

It just so happens that an hour before I was told that the Dodge inlet would work I was on the phone Max's and ordered the $90 inlet from them. I figured that if the Dodge part worked I can return this part to Max's

The Packard part has a good 1/4 inch of contact on the both sides. I'm will probably go ahead and use the part from Max unless someone thinks that 1/8 contact is OK.

That is disappointing. Looks like we are back to high price used or high price repro.

Just my but I would be wary on the 1/8". A wet gasket and pressured system and that small amount of contact sounds like a prime place for a blow out.

Wonder how that old piece would stand up to having a small length of exhaust tubing welded or brazed onto the flange or maybe over or inside a portion of the existing tube as is done when repairing the trans coolers.

Actually, with a rigid casting bolted to a rigid casting, and only 7 psi to worry about, I think 1/8 inch will be fine. Use a nice dense paper gasket.

Hi

The Packard inlet looks much like those on the old 318 Mopar V8's. I had a couple '70's Dodge vans and that unit look very familiar. Worth investigation if someone has access to one or check the local salvage yards.

That was an excellent point about the thermostat so I picked one up this week. Had to clean the rim of the water pump off with a dremel so it would sit in the lip but everything goes to together well.

I sent the $95 inlet back to Max's last week for a refund. Still need to pick up some new bolts but this $10 inlet is going to work. I added the NAPA part number if anyone is interested. All I had to do was elongate the holes a little toward the outside edge.

Also, the 700r4 rebuild is almost complete. I bought both a book and a DVD to assist me with the rebuild. Finishing up the modification for the 4th gear torque converter lockup but I feel good about this project so hopefully it will last me awhile.
