Anyone who thinks the factory-approved tool is inferior must have never used one (or a reasonable facsimile thereof).

I purchased two repros from Bob Berg, back in the late 1980s. They worked just fine, but after I expressed disappointment that his initial interpretation lacked a handle on the clevis/clamp as original, he sent me a pair (to weld on, locally). Subsequent runs included that handle in the assembly. I also purchased a third tool to help meet the minimum required for his last run, several years ago.

It is child's play to install and remove this tool - compared to diddling around with chain.

As I recall, the end of the tool fits the frame pocket nicely.

Brian,

I guess you never looked really close to how the J6065 tool actually seats in the frame:

Resized Image

That is a couple of 1/16s of an inch from coming loose.

I like the HD chain and GR8 bolts better as they WILL NOT come loose.

I've used Berg's tools on four 55-56 Packards that I've owned (and more than once on some) and nothing ever came loose.

Though I've never actually measured how much of the end of the tool engages the frame, it seemed to be significantly more than the "couple of 1/16s of an inch" that you claim.

BTW, what's up with the damage on the frame shown in the pic that you provided as evidence (in post #12)?

If the frame is sound, how's that tool, when locked in as shown, gonna move even "a couple of 1/16s of an inch" to lose its perch?

Riki,

In post #2....at the left end of the metal stock you used......there appears to be a bulbous shaped weld attaching the arm to your stock? Or is that just a visual illusion?

Also, I like the engineering and thought you put into securing that arm. Looks completely safe to me.

thanks kev,

i make sure its against the inside frame. finger tighten it, see if it slipped ,,then tighten it up,

with the engine in, i think a few turns would do it. then drop the arm down, A frame.. down,,

Thanks. Where did you put the screws...at each end of the gasket or on the back side? Since I haven't removed mine, I can't really see what you did.
