Gear Vendors OD Unit Installation

Just a few pictures showing the Gear Vendors OD installation I did in my '32 901.

I used custom 4140 steel couplings that accepted modern 1350 universal joints, to interface to the stock transmission and differential flanges. Two custom made drive shafts were used on the front and back of the GV unit.

If I want to bring the drive train back to stock I just remove the GV unit, two custom length drive shafts, and mounting plate. Re-install the original drive shaft and it is back to stock.

Wired in a manual lighted Bakelite mounted below the dash to use to switch the GV unit in / out.

I was wondering what the total cost was?

I have a friend who had a Gear Vendors OD installed some years back on a 1934 Super Eight. He did none of the work himself and the all-in cost was just above $5000 though there may have been some other non-related work done to the car at the same time though I've heard of quotes in the same general range for other prewar senior cars.

Current pricing on GV units are $2600 to $2800 depending on the model / application. I picked the unit I used up a few years ago when they were about 300 less.

http://www.gearvendors.com/prices.html

Custom drive shaft fabrication work will run around $150 per drive shaft.

Labor on this was mine, along with fabrication of the mounting plates and custom 1350 yokes to interface with the stock transmission and differential flanges.

If I had to have all this work done by someone else it would have been around $5000 - $6000.

Looks super!
Does Gear Vendors provide any general guidance on the installation like geometry recommendations or requirements?
I'm starting a frame off on my '37 Sport Coupe and hope to add one of these as it goes back together.

Bilbo,

Thank you, I appreciate the comment.

Tech support at Gear Vendors, at least the people I talked to were very helpful in giving general guidance and instruction.

They also have a few frame mounting plates for Packard's that work with their units. These are not listed on their site, you have to call and talk with tech support to find out if they have one for your year.

Some additional custom installations.

http://www.gearvendors.com/custom.html

Spicer has an excellent tech manual on proper drive shaft installation, I've attached a copy.

Drive shaft phasing, angles, alignment, and of course balance are key, pay close attention to these and you'll avoid a lot of headaches.

Dave
