I have a 1940 packard 110, 6 cyl, with an external oil filter, and am trying to locate where to buy a replacement filter. I took the old one out, and it has a cute little handle to remove it, but I cannot figure out where to find one of these jewels....any ideas??

I use WIX # 51010. Available almost anywhere. I wouldn't use Fram.

Wix makes oil filters for Napa. The numbers are usually the same as Wix without the 5. i.e Wix 51010 would be Napa 1010
I use Napa 1080 for my 1940/356 engine.

I wonder what the difference is, because I use the 1010 for my 1940 180????

Refill elements depend upon the make of the filters (Purolator, Fram, AC). The housings and plumbing differed from make to make and with the engines to which they were fitted.

Decided to change the oil filter today. What was in the filter is an AC PF 106, I have three I believe replacement filters. The Purolator P316, Fram C233PL, and the WIX 51080.The difference I see is the AC has a flange at the top, and recessed at the bottom. The others are flat. I guess it doesn't matter as long as the filter fits tight? I have two of the WIX which leads me to believe that is the correct cartridge for the AC filter. The filter housing top has a round spring loaded flange.

WIX just adds a "5" in front of the NAPA number so WIX 51080 = NAPA 1080 which is what I used in the 1941 factory-installed filters on senior engines and assume 1940 is the same and the juniors are probably the same if also factory equipment; I used the same 1080 right thru 1950 on my Custom 8. However if you have a dealer-installed filter or some later installation it may take a different cartridge.

I would probably believe it is factory. When I got the car 25 years ago, and still doing an ongoing up keeping and restoration, showed the car to many a P.I. members in southern California. At that time parts were plentiful and tried my best to keep everything as from factory. I will put in the WIX, again they are a bit shorter than the old AC without the flanges, but if a snug fit all should be well.
