1938 Packard Twelve mystery shifter?

I was looking (drooling to be more precise) at the photos of the 1938 Twelve Victoria being auctioned on e-bay when I noticed what appears to be a shifter knob close to the edge of the front seat similar if not exactly the same as the one on the gear shifter lever. Is this original to the car and if so what is its purpose?

Looks like someone has added a non-stock overdrive unit.

I noticed that too, but I just figured that since Mr. Hartmann knows the guy who owns it that it had at one time visited "PFH's Packard Twelve Modification Shop" and was fitted with 4 wheel drive.

Isn't that the Manual Ride control? The more you twist it to the left, the softer the ride, and the more you turn it to the right the firmer the ride. Or maybe its the ebrake lever? Or, maybe it was a mobster car, and once you pull the lever it drops an oil slick, or a box of nails for the people following you!

Great Pic!

Well we didnt have the guns....but here is a picture of me and the boys during our recent trip to Vegas... Our friends jokingly refer to us as the "Goatee Mafia". So we decided to play the part. I am the 2nd from the right in that pic.

Though I know it's uncharacteristic of me, I think the best comment to the last photo is "no comment"!

See - Turbo - how little you know about twelve cylinder cars and what we do to them at my special shop....I bet you thought that was the hand-shifter for one of the several over-drive units that are avail.

W R O N G

That is a Packard-installed factory "option". The Packard Motor Car Company felt SO badly about the vastly superior performance of its V-12's, that, for people with compassion for the feelings of the eight cyl. Packards, you could buy a special "cylinder disconnect" lever, as this one is equipped with.

See...you "throw" that little lever, and it dis-connects ten of the twelve cylinders, so that you eight cyl. Packard guys can keep up with it, and not feel so bad.......

If it has a red hex on the hub-cap, I love it
