And here is the wiring diagram.
<a href="http://s102.photobucket.com/user/brianl_03/media/47overdrive_zps81f58ec8.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m81/brianl_03/47overdrive_zps81f58ec8.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 47overdrive_zps81f58ec8.jpg"/></a>

This may look complicated but it's really pretty easy.
#57 to key on power
#58 to governor switch

Yes, it is that easy. If you decide to run an indicator light to show when it is on, add a wire to #58 and connect it to your light. I've been running mine this way for over 5 years with absolutely no trouble. Keep in mind.... NEVER try to put it in reverse in the overdrive position.

Is that diagram for the R9? It seems to show the R9-type relay on it.

On a slightly related note, I mentioned the Cruise-In show that Richie attended at a Corvette board meeting last night. Several of the Corvette guys erupted with praise for his Packard (how often does that occur?) and told me that I had missed a real opportunity not being there with my 56. Apparently, the 47 Clipper stole the show, at least in the eyes of the Corvette guys. There will be other opportunities to get together, but the effusive praise for our older cars really gladdened my heart.

Here in the Atlanta area, we seem to have large, well-attended old and specialty car shows most weekends during the warm season. The largest can draw 2,000 cars and more people than you'd care to be around. Even a tried-by-fire former Hudson owner will become used to the question: "Who made Packard? Ford or GM?" So many times I have been tempted to say "Hewlett".

Now a question for West Peterson. Does your overdrive cable have a built in switch like the factory unit in my 49? If so, I want one. Can you give us some more info?

I don't supply them. I see them listed on eBay from time to time, including two listed right now (links below). They are the same as yours, but neither seems to have the actual switch included. There is a switch on eBay in a separate listing.

The extra overdrive unit that I have is an R11, and is totally complete, including kick-down switch, relay, governor, mounts and solenoid. It is only missing the lockout cable and the insulator mount. I bought it thinking it was an R9, but it turned out to be an R11.

None of these links are mine.

Just a note. The schematic in post 11 is for the R9 OD. No idea if Hudson used B-W or if so, both versions but they are quite different units. If you are installing the R11, electrical is much simplified. There is a description of the overall OD operation and a schematic in Service Counselor Vol 23 #2.http://www.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/SC/SC-VOL23NO2.pdf The layout as given in the R9 diagram above is generally correct but a few items are no longer used or on different sides. If you check the 23rd series wiring diagram, it will have a pictoral layout similar to the one above for the R11. Just ignore the Electromatic clutch info.

The R11 was made available as a kit for install in cars having the R9 (which included 47's) so that installation procedure might be of some help in where to position new items. SC Vol 23 #4 has some details of the kit and mentions a few other things that was needed to complete the install on an existing OD car.

Since there are other things involved besides just the OD unit, you might need to go thru the parts manual and figure out what else is different between an OD and non OD car in the way of mounts and brackets. Some you can make or possibly repurpose the originals but others you may need to source before you start.

Thanks TanTank, HH56, West and Dave. All very useful information, I made favorites of the comments and diagram.
Dave, there were lots of people looking at the 47 and had nice things to say. I enjoy talking with all the car people. Thanks again everyone. Richie.
