How much pressure should a 6v electric fuel pump put out for a 327 4 barrel carburetor?

Mechanical pump specs were 4-5 psi out to carb so you want to keep it in that range.

If you are adding one for emergency use then many of the electric pulse type pumps can be found in the 5-8psi range. If mounted near the fuel tank and plumbed so the mechanical pump pulls thru the electric, they are quite satisfactory. The Airtex E8011 is in that range. If you are going to rely totally on the electric and eliminate the mechanical then that one may be a bit strong and a different pump or a regulator to lower the psi might work better.

This may be overkill, but you can add a petcock and a gauge, to control the pressure which can also be over 10 psi.

Joe, interesting set-up for your electric fuel pump. I guess it would be called a by-pass installation instead of a series installation, which is more common. If I understand it right, the mechanical pump does not draw through the electric pump, but the pressure regulated electric pump pumps through the mechanical pump like in a series installation. More simple than a parallel installation, and more elegant than a series installation. Thanks for sharing. Interesting, very interesting...

If better, JW, it was completely by accident.

The electric fuel pump switch has a spring toggle in one direction and I use it just before starting the car if it's been sitting. I think it has helped me push through vapor lock once or twice. I have a foot-long piece of snap-over pipe insulation around it, lots of breathing room, just to keep it al from getting dirty under there.

Just for information purposes. I spent lots on fuel problems and I found out the standard Packard mechanical pump, when operating correctly will out pump any electrical pump. It has a diameter almost 3'' and can pump a lot of fuel.

I run a 350CFM Holley on my stock 288 and it will easily run 90 mph., with no fuel starvation. The Holley has a 30cc accelerator pump, so no hesitation. You need to chase all vacuum leaks and get the ignition operating at max and that stock pump will do the trick.

Be careful routing electric thru mechanical. If mechanical ruptures the diaphragm the fuel can get pumped into crankcasee. I don't like routing thru the mechanical pump.
