How many different keys came with pre War Packs?

Back in the mid-Sixties, I seem to remember that cars came with three keys: ignition, trunk/door, and glove compartment.

How many keys did pre-War Packards come with?

kind regards
Garrett Meadows

My experience for the sixties was that the door and ignition key was the same and that the trunk and glove box were the same key if installed at the factory. Therefore two keys.

I couldn't clearly remember what the key combination was, but you are correct.

I well remember my late father swearing a blue blazes whenever he'd get the keys confused. But, then again, it didn't take much to get my father to swear.

kind regards

It varied considerably depending on what equipment your prewar car had and what vintage it was.

So by way of example, my 34 has the following keys:

Ignition
Door lock (no glove box locks)
Oakes lock to secure sidemount wheel
See-Rite lock and key for sidemount mirrors
Key for external Kam-Lee trunk.

Garett - the ignition and door lock keys in the late 30's on were usually different shaped. One was a hexagon, and the other round; probably because GM keys were this way, and the same supplier sold to Packard and GM and several others. I know my 51 Packard came with some AMC keys.

Packard lock cylinders were exclusively Briggs & Stratton between 1935 and 1956. Same 250 keys every year, P1251 thru P1500.

...and don't forget the separate key for accessories such as the locking gas cap, spare tire lock (inside the trunk!) or the locking trunk tilt brackets... thank goodness we aren't fooling with vintage Rolls-Royce's where there is that persistent rumor that there was a locked hood and only the mechanic had the key!

Is there an universal key for prewar Packards? I'm dying to find out what's in the toolbox on my 32 coupe (I know curiosity killed the cat). Any suggestions how to get in it without damaging anything?

A universal key? No.

With a little practice those locks are not to difficult to pick.

A decent little starter pick set can be bought from SouthOrd for less than $20. If you're in the hobby for the long haul it's a handy skill to develop as cars with missing keys crop up fairly often.
