Does anyone have the number for the rear axle bearing on a 56 Packard - it is not in our Xref.

I believe SKF 88128R is correct - two piece set, the bearing and the lock ring.

Using the "search" feature brings this up:

If this bearing is like the ones on the rear axle of my hot rod (8" Ford Granada) you will need to cut the retainer locking ring off before pressing off the bearing. Pressing off the retainer will gall the axle and the new retainer will not fit correctly. After the retainer has been cut off and the new bearing has been pressed on the new retainer will need to be heated to expand it so it will easily slip on to the axle. After it cools it will be secure. At least this is how the mechanic explained the job to me and he has done 100s of them.

Agree with JW, though I've seen the retainer removed by simply giving it a good sharp whack with a cold chisel and hammer - it fractures and simply falls off.

Some Added info on the Dana 53 Rear ends. I did a lot of research and cross over work with Yukon Gear.

If you choose, you can purchase a Master Rebuild Kit for the Dana 53 rear end. These are a bit salty at $367 YK D53.

I did mine separately for $248. Carrier and Pinion shims were the bugger to find.

Carrier Shims sk 30214 $7.68. These shims are listed for the Dana 44 (30 spline) and are the exact same shims that are used in the Dana 53.

The Pinion shims skgm9.5 $11.60. These shims are listed for the GM9.5 but again are the exact same shims that are used in the Dana 53.

I will add the shims to the cross reference file.

Timken is made in China.
So is Napa stuff.
Max wants $75.00 for an original.
I had a spare axle and used it.
I have a bearing place to call on Monday.
