2272-9 numbers on the block

Seeing as I'm still learning new things about Packards I am posting two pictures of numbers I found while cleaning the block (motor) on my 1949 2272-9 Super Eight Sedan. They are located on the drivers side, bottom lower back of the engine. I am assuming the one picture is showing a casting date, but I'm puzzled on the other which was just forward of the date number. Anyone have any info on these numbers?

I'm going to leave this post in case others have the same questions, but I located my answers here on PackardInfo. They are engine casting numbers. Thanks to those who provide this wealth of information.

Yes. I don't know about the very early (pre 1920 or so) Packards but all the years I'm familiar with have casting dates.

I would think most all the engine castings must have had some kind of date for quality purposes. Packard V8 posted a photo of an engine which appears to have a 10-11-48 casting number. The other number on his looks to be 122 instead of your 55. No idea what that second number is but maybe some kind of reference to the master pattern they used to make the sand mold or maybe the actual sequence number in the line of engines that was cast that day??

Yes, this "48" number looks like the same type of marking. I'm not sure what the "55" is either..

I believe it does Have the same casting number scheme based on what I've learned.
