Engine starting problem

I am trying to start my 38 engine for the first time after a rebuild. All ignition parts are new. I have a strong spark at the points. I have removed a spark plug with the plug wire attached and cranked the engine and I see not spark at all. I also installed a new coil and also tried to start it with the existing coil. What could I be overlooking.

If I understand what you are saying and we are both on the same page as to what is a strong spark I think the spark at the points is a clue. There should be minimal to no spark. The condenser is there to prevent a strong spark which could destroy the points in short order. At the most it would be a very tiny one. Did the voltage check at the coil terminals I mentioned on your other post check out?

One other thing is the high voltage lead from the coil to dist. Another poster found one of the terminations between the wire center conductor and the brass contact terminal on his wire to be in poor condition resulting in a very weak spark. If you are running resistor instead of copper core wires that could also be a problem on 6v ignition.

Probably a silly question, but I will ask: Did you by chance get the distributor in 180 deg. off? It can go in either way as the slot on the shaft is not offset. An easy mistake many of us have made.

Edit: I now see where O_D addressed this in your other post. Looks like you may have a different kind of problem or maybe both.

Here's a thing my mate found with a replacement rotor, it didn't have the little metal "clip", or whatever it's called, inside the hub of the rotor. So that when the rotor is pushed onto the top of the distributor shaft it holds the rotor in place. Needed to remove the "clip" from the old rotor and insert it in the new rotor.

I will be checking to see if I'm 180 out or not. Thank you for your reply.

I checked the clip in the rotor and it is there. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

NO spark at plugs:
Distributor position would not cause that.
In the very FIRST post he indicates all new ignition parts.
THe problem is most likely with the new ignition parts.

ONE BY ONE replace the new parts with the OLD parts until the problem ceases.

My first suspicion is condenser. Second is coil.
