My 38 engine started but still a problem. For some reason gas and oil are running down the passenger side of the engine starting just under the manifold as soon as I start it. It has only been run about 15 seconds and I quickly shut it off when this started. I think one problem that I have is possibly a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm .The top of the fuel pump cavity was full of gas and it was also evident that I could smell gas on the dipstick and the oil was also thinner. The gas was mixed with oil was dark and was running down almost the entire side of the engine . I also was wondering if I could have a combination of a carburetor needle hung open along with a bad fuel pump. The oil is new and has only a total of about a minute of running time.

I got a fuel pump rebuild kit from these guys, it was complete and they are very good about answering questions. Or you can send them the pump and they'll do it, costs more of course.

Or these guys do rebuilds, I had them do my water pump and it was fast and cheap. They do fuel pumps too, good reputation.

If the pump is original then it is shot, little question about that.

Gould does fantastic work on fuel pumps. I sent mine in to be rebuilt and my wife did not recognize that it was the same part. It looks brand new. Highly recommended.
