1948 22nd Series Transmission Rebuild with R-11 Service Needed

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum.

I am looking for a transmission rebuild service for the three speed manual transmission with R-11 overdrive.

The trans was working fine until there was a time when the trans seemed to get stuck with no forward or reverse gear...the engine would stall when the clutch was released so the transmission was "frozen" internally.

During trouble shooting (rocking the car forward and back) with the engine running there was a loud "clunking" sound when the clutch was coupled and then the transmission worked however the overdrive stopped working. Apparently the R-11 overdrive had "frozen" and therefore did not allow output of the engine power.

Now the car will operate in all three forward gears with NO overdrive and then when the over drive is set to engage the output of the propeller shaft will stop however you can still hear when the clutch is engaged that the internal parts of the transmission gearbox is moving however there is no output of the transmission.

Does anyone know of a reputable transmission re-builder in the San Francisco Bay Area of these transmissions OR know of a source for rebuilt transmissions?

G'day Packard 1948,
to PackardInfo and sorry to hear of your OD woes.

However on a happier note, I invite you to include your '48 Packard in the Packard Owner's Registry.

Maybe some of our Bay Area friends will come by and provide some help. Also, there is an active region of the Packard Club, Northern California Packards. Mike, and you there?
