Apologies for going a bit off-topic. Other than the radial diesel aircraft engines, the only diesels I'm aware of that Packard designed and produced, at least as a commercial venture, are the non-magnetic engines made in the 50s for U.S. Navy minesweeper service. These were turbocharged and in production from 1951 thru 1956.

Here's 2 photos of one, taken during the PAC National in Pontiac this year at the Proving Grounds. An idea of the size is given by the Packard IM-245 alongside. This engine restored and donated by Mr. Ole Book.

Here's a particularly nice photo (U.S. Navy photo) of MSO-458 (USS Lucid); this class were fitted with 4 of the V-16 diesels for propulsion and 2 V8 diesels for general electrical supply. This ship is preserved and currently at the Stockton Historical Maritime Museum and well-worth a visit by those interested in Packard marine engines. Second photo courtesy of the museum.

Yes Dave, I agree. A nice photo of a nice ship. I can't reason why but I like the design of hull and superstructure of this old minesweeper.

I actually served for 6 weeks aboard one the Packard-powered minesweepers, for my 3rd class midshipman cruise during the summer of 1972. That was the USS Esteem (MSO-438). The cruise started in Long Beach, up to San Francisco for some a minesweeping exercise with other wooden-hulled craft. On the return, liberty in Monterey, and back to Long Beach. The Packard propulsion performed flawlessly. I don't seem to recall whether it was equipped with an Ultramatic -- (just kidding, it was an Electromatic).

Dear Mr. Ozstatman

could your model be a Marmon 34 engine.
339.63 cui. Overhead-valve straight-six 74hp.
Block cast in light alloy.
No turbocharger.
But exhaust gases flow into "hot ring" atop carburetor to help heat incoming air during cold.

Mike

Yep, would agree that it is a Marmon motor - very sharp eye there Mr. V8fan.
