Bought a '50 two door last week...

Hey,Everyone!

Well it took me a couple of tries, but I finally got hold of a guy in Pasadena who's had this 1950 two door on CraigsList off and on for at least seven months. A lot of money would be spent fixing the rust issues on my '49,so this particular car has interest me from day one. His number never worked in the past, and he would never respond to emails. I called again last week after he posted it again and expected the same, but he actually responded via email this time.I arranged a meeting two days later, and after seeing it 15 seconds I bought it on the spot.

He's been touting it as a parts car in his CL ads,but with the exception of the seats and radiator,it seems to be all there. It's just in pieces. All the trim and glass is there, and the floors and trunk suggest California car -- it appears as if it was being prepped for paint at the time too.The sheet metal appears to be in great shape to say the least.A lot better than my '49s.Based on the newspapers that wrapped a lot of newly plated trim (Both bumpers have been rechromed also),work on this car was abandoned in 2001 for some reason. The car is caked in dust/dirt.There are many new parts included (timing chain, lifters, spark plugs, fuel pump, gasket set, bearings, tires, etc) with the only part noticeably missing being the radiator.I still have not seen the engine from the top side given it is still on a rack.

...For me the big Mayan mystery is why was the work seemingly abandoned as it was? The engine was raised and the oil pan was dropped with all of the pistons pulled out.It also appears that the automatic tranny was rebuilt given its appearance. Even the dash and all wiring assemblies were pulled out.

Given this, will combining the parts of both cars be rather seamless given they appear very close in dimensions, etc?

Pictures forthcoming...

Last two...My F-150 nearing its emptying and cleaning one of the chrome bumpers before wrapping it.

Overall,I thought I got a pretty good deal (A steal for what I paid) and I also got to meet another Packard Aficionado from this board when I went back to get all the parts -- I simply didn't want anything lost or bent (the stainless steel molding is in excellent condition). Most of the items are now bagged, boxed, or tagged, until the car gets shipped down here.
Once down here,I have to decide which way I'm going to attack it first.

Looks like your Pasadena purchase did result in some nice pieces. Aside from nice chrome there is even a windshield washer option which you don't see installed on that many cars of that era. Next to it is part of a rotary antenna. Too bad the mast on that antenna is broken. With the demand today, those things in working conditions are like gold -- or at least a vendor that was selling a refurbished unit on ebay thinks so.

As to why a car was abandoned mid project -- could be lots of reason. Lack of money, enthusiasm, time, change of priorities, you name it. It happens to the best of us and the car suffers from the neglect. I can speak first hand to a certain 47 that sat in my yard abandoned mid project for nearly 20 years before the renewed interest in finishing it came back. Sitting all those years made what was a very presentable car turn into a basket case and total money pit.

That looks like a sold car/parts car. I hope it helps you bring one back on the road.

BUT what really caught my eye was the lift that it is on. It is a 2 post that has ramps. Never seen that before, a 2 post that has ramps like a 4 post.
