A new, thinner type of safety glass was introduced in the mid seventies.

Correct Rusty, but that was tempered safety glass, not laminate. Packard didn't live long enough to get into the era of laminated safety glass. I suppose it's quite possible that some glass shop made a substitution to the thinner glass but you have to wonder why, given the ready availability of the correct glass - even precut from original patterns if you wish.

I was wondering the same thing but it is the only explanation I can think of for 2 different thicknesses of glass.
