1940 Trunk Floor Coating?

Before I do away with the old trunk floor I wanted to find out what the coating on it is, or if it is original. This is in a 1940 120 Convertible Coupe. It has a slightly rougher texture than undercoating and seems to be "gritty" when scraping it off. There doesn't seem to be any other paint or coating underneath it so I'm thinking that it's original.

If it is original, was the whole trunk sprayed with this or just the floor? Was it top coated with anything, body color paint? Or just left black?

I suspect is is the same flocking material introduced with the 17th series and continued thru at least 54 on various portions of the trunk. They did appear to change colors with different years and models so if you find a good section where you can get a decent sample it would be wise to save a piece.

Todays rayon flock material is a much finer fiber than Packard used but you can usually come up with a halfway decent color match. If nothing stock is close, FlockIt and others will custom color match a batch. Todays nylon fibers are a bit coarser -- still not like the original -- and would probably be more suitable but have fewer colors available.

I used the Flockit kit for my 39 120. I cleaned up the trunk, repaired some minor rust holes, and then painted it a flat black. I then flocked it with a gray color, covering both the sides and the floor. It looks great and covered quite well. If I were to do it again, I would have used the tan color. But it has held up great and was very easy to install.
