Did Packard ever make a steam-engine?

I was stunned to discover that a Stanley Steamer set a speed record of 127 mph in 1906! Wow! That's incredible. Does anyone know the top speed of an internal combustion engine of the same time period?

Did Packard ever produce a steam engine?

Kind regards
Garrett Meadows

The Wiki list of land speed records shows the 06 Stanley's record standing until 1924, when broken by a Fiat, which averaged 145.8mph over a mile. Prior to the Stanley's mark, the record had been set by the Ford 999 at 91.37mph in 1904.

I read "Master Motor Builders" about a year ago, and do not recall Packard doing a lot of work on steam engines.

Gerd,

Your tentacles, when the word "Packard" is uttered, appear to find all sorts of related and unrelated Packard artifacts and facts. I'm amazed, but look forward to continuing to be amazed!

What a fascinating article! I always marvel over how any object of antiquity manages to survive--in tact or in pieces.

I was driving through some very rural areas of south Louisiana this past weekend and noticed several car junk yards still harboring cars/trucks from the late forties/early fifties, albeit rusting and in sorry shape, but restorable.

as always
