I used to own a 1908 Stanley Steamer model EX, 10 HP.

Once fired up (20 minutes) it was way quicker than my 54 Packard Cavalier is.

My Stanley was bought new by a Dr. Lang in 1908, who probably kept the car fired up to do house calls for which it was probably much more flexible than the crank start Infernal Combustion cars of the period.

A little gas and an occasional horse trough for water and the Stanley could fly.

IIRC about 1908 or so a high power Stanley did 127+ mph at Daytona, more than twice what most conventional cars could do.

To my knowledge Packard never built a steam engine, or at least not one intended for an automobile.

The only one (non original) I've heard of is:

I still remember my first ride in an early 1900's steam car owner by Louis Biondi. Was only about eight. Utterly quiet except for the chuf-chuf.

A university put a Stanly steam engine on a dyno years back. If I remember correctly they were getting close to 80 Hp and 500 ft.-lbs. of torque from a 20 hp engine.

Since the torque is developed at 0 rpm, acceleration is phenomenal.
