Not much better way to spend Father's day weekend than going through old photo albums and learning about my family history from my Grandfather who pretty much kept everything.

I have a couple of full boxes of nothing but at least half a century worth of Packard collecting. I have old letter head from the PMMC to my Grandfather, with the original envelope and stamp. Apparently he submitted sketches of cars for possible production maybe. One of the letters written back was from the VP himself.

My Grandfather is the whole reason I'm the way I am with Packards....obsessed!

Here are some examples of what I have to share. Unless Kev disagrees, I plan to upload several pictures of what I find over time. Kind of a "project blog" but in the general Packard section.

I'm having to go through all this a little at a time, the shear size of it is overwhelming. Some of it is old family photos, which I wont post, so bear with me as I get to all of the Packard stuff I think you guys would find interesting.

In several of the photos I noticed my Grandfather was wearing a certain Packard hat that I happen to have still, so yup....I put it on and kept looking at Packard pics. can you tell I'm in hog heaven! just look at that crazy fool's mug!

I believe the photo of the 48 convertible to be a period correct photo, perfectly preserved. I'm also pretty sure that is the Fort Worth Packard dealer, the same one that I took my Packard chassis to and had photos of with my Father.

That's me at about 5 with the 47 Packard. I have a picture of my aunt at about the same age when my Grandfather picked that car up in 1966. talk about crazy!

the sketch looks like my Grandfather tried to marry the Predictor with the Panther. pretty cool.

Also...Happy Father's day. I know I'm in Packard and Father's day Heaven!

Hi Henry

Thanks for sharing your family artifacts for us to enjoy, we'd all love to have the depth of Packard ownership and appreciation in our family histories. Wish I had photos of a five year old me with a family '47 Packard Custom Super in 1957.....my parents and grandparents were Ford and Chevy folks. What a Father's Day treasure trove you have.

Steve

P.S.: Consider writing up an article for the clubs to publish covering your finding in the collection and your family history with Packards. I love to read how interwoven these fine cars were into people's lives then and now.

thanks guys, I will be going through more stuff soon and I will post more.

the military ID is my Grandfather's. He was a radio operator/top gunner on a B17, but he did not see action I don't believe.

Today for my Dad I was able to get his 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 on the showroom floor of a Dodge Dealer. The first dealer wasn't accommodating, politics I swear. the second was more then happy to help.

I surprised him by telling him I had a car I was going to buy, but I wanted him to look it over. I told him it was on the showroom floor and that they wouldn't let me test drive it and I needed his help on it.

he was surprised to say the least.

Hank, thanks for the posts. You might want to start doing a history of the Packards North Texas club while some of the old members are still with us. Hayden would be a great source of info. If I remember correctly the club was started in 1972. I remember your grandfather very well - he was a great source of info on Packards, trains and architecture. I enjoy the first and last items, so we had a number of things in common. Keep up the good work.

here are some more images to weed through. I randomly picked images to post. some are old advertisements, some old military stuff, Packard pics from past meets. Several of his 47, of which recently changed hands.

some of the pics of the 47 are from the set of Dallas the movie. I want to say this car was also used in Born on the 4th of July. some pics of when he bought the car in 1966, that is my dad standing next to the car.

I have a few pictures of old meets from the north texas club, but I don't think I took pics of those.

a message from Hayden several years ago left my grandfather, it was inbetween several advertisements.

I booklet full of cigar wrappers, many of which are Cuban.

a lucky strike cigarette box. a military bible

an article in the paper about the new Packard coming out and the dealership in Fort Worth. course the pic I took sucked and the image is too blurry to read it. basically it talks about the new Packard and the salesman which is pictured and gives the address of the dealer.

several photos of my Grandfather when he was little and several family photos with Packards.

sorry its been a while....been busy. but I still have a full box of stuff to get through. there will be more to come.

Hi Hank - saw your photos - the one of the pale blue 40 120 with the red wheels is my old car. I bought it from a doctor in Abilene Texas and drove it for a number of years. Here is another photo of it with me, at Chuck Murphy's recreated gas station in his back yard.
