Gear reduction starter info

Does anyone have the clearance dimension between the casting and pinion when solenoid is in full engagement for the Autolite MAX-4052 or similar Autolite starters used on the postwar 356 engines? Any adjustment info would be helpful. I'm not convinced mine is correct as there seems to be a fair amount of clearance compared to later Delcos.

Have found a few electrical specs for an earlier starter in a prewar SM but no mechanical. Nothing in postwar SMs for those particular gear reduction starters or in any general reference books I have.

My only comment, I've never seen a grease plug at the gearset, always a hinged cap oiler. Never had one apart, never serviced one other than brushes.

Correction, the disengaged measurement is 15/16" for the MAX 4052 & 4041 NOT 1-11/32".

Much appreciated and exactly what I was looking for. Mine does appear to be too far out so will see if I can get that closer.

Dave, I believe the grease plug is to only fill the gearbox cavity. The prewar manual said use a "high melting point grease". You can see the usual small capped oil hole for the bushing sitting at an angle just to the left of the plug.
