The drivers side also has a support perpendicular to the fender to add support to the trunk floor where the filler neck is. Attached is a pic of a hole in the trunk floor showing what was left of it on my '51.

Thanks Packard51.... What is the material that is going up along the wheel well to the quarter panel in the picture? Seam sealer or some type of "roping"?

The packing material between the inner and outer fenders is some sort of felt material, I'm sure somebody who has physically replaced these parts will chime in and tell us how far it extends in there. I'm guessing it's there to take up slack and prevent rattles, and seal dirt out (or in, it is a little porous).
