I don't recall using any pliers or wrenches to hold the inside nut. Once I got the inside nut set and lock ring placed, I just snugged down the outside nut and inserted a cotter (split) pin to secure everything.

JW, the major problem with doing it your way is that the rotational torque of tightening just the outer nut without holding the inner is that it stresses the metal keyway tab on the perforated ring and ultimately it can fail (as you can see in post #2 of this thread) which isn't all that uncommon to find.

Good morning, Yes you can damage the tab, so this is what I did, I used 1/8" x 1 1:2" flat steel stock and cut pieces to the shape of a wrench using the 1 5/8" nut as a guide I clamped the pieces to my welding table. After fabricating it was still to wide to fit I back of the lock washer so I tapered the wrenches outside edges to fit behind the locking washer because the space was less than 1/8". Also every time I locked the nuts together using the wrench the bearings were to tight so I had to back it off another hole in the locking ring. Dave

O_D, agreed. One must be careful doing it the way I described. My method has worked - first time in 2006 and again in 2015. Next time I will find a way to hold the inner nut while tightening the outer one. One must be careful not to learn something new each day.

I also want to mention that when I first got the car in 2006 I discovered that there were no cotter pins installed, just the outer nuts tightened against the inner ones!

That's scary! Makes you wonder what other wonderful things the prior owner(s) did.

The Packard was practically undriveable when I bought it. The seller did take good care of the car's appearance. I knew it had good bones and could do most all of the mechanical work needed. I went through all the systems and got all the maintenance and service up to date and made necessary repairs. The missing cotter pins was the biggest safety item I found. It has been trouble free since then, except when the distributor decided to come apart. Half the fun of having a Packard is working on it, the other half is driving it.
