Inner says 1-5/8"

looking through Timken catalog right now.

looks like this is a possibility and price is much better.

https://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p/NOS16062/NOS16062_0200372498?interchange=1

and here are the list of Timken numbers that have similar dimensions.

trans from 36 car had huge hole in side....thought it made a good demo of the gears from the side.

I took the top off of the trans that came out of the car...you can see (circled red) why I was having so many issues with the trans. reverse and 1st looked like poop. synchros look okay....so no idea why it would grind in 2nd along with knocking noise. doesn't matter...new trans was up next

I got around to taking apart the trans that I received from Flackmaster. good chance for me to understand how it works and to clean it all up. new bearings and seals, etc.

needle bearing showed pitting, so I'm really glad I took it apart.

will make my own seals for the trans itself....I already have material, although a bit thicker. 1/32" if not...order it

I used an old motors manual I got from my Grandfather. it was very helpful in labeling each part of the trans for people like me that have no clue.

I pushed out the counter shaft and follow the repair manual step by step.

trans and gears in witch's brew to degrease. while other parts that were soaking have been washed and are ready for paint.

as long as rear end is 4.54, then speedo gear is correct ratio.

had to buy a cheap 1-1/4" socket to grind down to fit on the 115 output shaft nut. the flange was too small for my normal 1-1/4" socket and its craftsman so I wasn't going to grind on that. I tapered the socket and it fit perfectly. my craftsman socket fit fine on the 120 flange.

cleaning up the gears on the new transmission. second gear has a few worn ball bearings, but it does spin well with lubricant and it was fine when it had gear lube on it in the trans case. also the gears are lapped as a set and my old second gear is even worse! I'm thankful for the new gears and believe I will get many more miles from them. everything else is excellent!

I have new bearings from a good friend and will make new gaskets. thanks for everything DAF!

I started by spraying my usual rust converter slash primer after wire brushing the pooh out of the case. then I waited a few days and sprayed on the Packard green. per the usual Henry norm, stainless bolts to be added. yes I know it will never be seen, but I'm ocd.

also took the master cylinder out, took it apart, cleaned it in my degreaser brew, and repainted with high temp paint. mostly for its oil/gas resistance properties. baked it in the oven and rebuild will commence tomorrow, sans the extra rubber washer they decided to add to the old kit....doesn't belong there. contemplating honing it, but need to buy new hone. used up the old one on the brake for the 70 Dart. new master cylinder kit was bought from rock auto, part number pictured.

oil pump cleaned, wire brushed, and rust converter slash primered. will be ready for paint when mounted to motor.

old crank was turned .020 on the number 6 journal, which matches up with the bent rod and the piston with the skirt expander. you can see the two white marks on the journal...meaning .020

the motor must have thrown a bearing on number 6. I'm hoping the bores are all good. will know tomorrow.

new crank obtained from the 36 parts I acquired. it was turned .010/.010 at some point and had new bearings in the block. the bearings had some bad spots though and machinist says usable if unable to get new ones. i'll get new ones. Crank had some very small surface rust on the journals that polished right off with out changing the .010/.010 says machinist

valves turned, checking guides tomorrow.

studs coming out, wish me luck because if they break off....its 35 a stud to drill and tap. fingers crossed.

top of trans says 454, not sure if it was from factory marking or not. but its correct number for the limo and the speedo gear is correct as well. need check rear gear for tag or turn wheels and count turns on driveshaft to confirm ratio.

while at the machine shop, and I'm no expert, there was a Packard inline 6 marked with a date of 40 it appeared. I guess that is 1940. the owner of this motor was said to be glad mine was at the same shop.

You mention that the needle bearings had some rust but you show a caged roller bearing with lots of rust on one roller.
That needs to be replaced, cleaning will not do.

new, excellent cage roller has been acquired...DAF

the rollers i was refering to were the countershaft ones. going to take some from the original trans that are, hopefully, in better shape.

second gear ball bearings have some spots, but will function well i believe. spins well with lubricant.

can someone confirm that the rubber washer circled in the picture is indeed not needed. reason for asking is I did not put it in with the new kit you see below the old kit. It was not in the new kit and I don't actually believe it should be there.

BUT, when installed the new kit and pushed down on the piston...the metal washer that sits on the lock spring will move back and forth...seems like it would wear out doing that.

if that rubber washer was in there behind that metal washer then it would keep it from moving back and forth...probably why they put it in there. but that has me concerned that the piston will not return enough to keep the secondary cup from covering the return port to the fluid chamber.

the brakes were working before....but this metal washer moving back and forth when pushing on the piston has me baffled.

thoughts?

Nevermind..... original washed thicker then the one in the new kit. Problem solved.

master cylinder honed and rebuilt. old washer was thicker then the new one, so reused the old one to solve the problem above.

after honing, cylinder was .995 still good.
