I am trying to find an equivalent type of oil for the gearbox in my 1926 3rd series six.

I have 90 grade at present but the gear cluster takes too long to slow down when the clutch is depressed causing much too much grating etc. The owners book says Whitmans 600. Is there an equivanent to this?

G'day Phil,

Reading posts on other Forums I've seen a number of mentions of Model T's using what's called 600W with suggestions to procure such from Model T sources.

But......have you enquired of someone like DavidM who has both '22 and '29 Packards and will be very familiar with their lubrication requirements.

The phone number for Vintique is 714-634-1932. If you give them a call, they will tell you who handles their oil in your area. Enjoy your day. Ernie, caretaker of 'Miss Prudence' a 1949 288 Deluxe

You might want to check Mobil's series of 600 XP gear oils for enclosed case splash-lubricated spur and helical gears. It comes in 5 or 6 viscosity grades. Lubricated has similar products that are available in smaller quantities like 5 gallon pails rather than drums.

Phil,
I had the same problem with the initial charge of oil, I don't recall the exact viscosity but it was around 90 and very difficult to engage low gear.
I spoke to Penrite at the time and they recommended their 250 grade oil and I have been using that ever since in both the 126 and 633. I also just put it in the "new" 740.
It allows you to engage low gear with minimal noise.

Thanks David, I will follow up on Penrite. Thanks to the other members who also replied. Happy Packarding.

For my friends '31 Pierce-Arrow with a straight-cut spur gear and non-synchro transmission we used SAE 250 simple gear oil with a defoamer, GL-1, essentially matching the OEM's recommended lubricant. Very satisfied with the performance.

I use Penrite 250 in the rear ends in all my cars (14,18 Cadillacs and 37 Packard) and use it in the Cadillac transmissions. Seems to work great. I get the Penrite 250 from Restoration Supply in Escondido CA restorationstuff.com

I hope the Penrite 250 oil you are using in your 37 Packard differential is GL5 or HP rated.
