Just my two cents but think the reason they get bent is being too far outward.

Based on observation and playing a bit, If the screws are in slots so the thin or screw side edge of bumper is flush with the inside fender edge the round portion stays on the fender. Bumper is supported on the bottom so can't bend. If the screws are at the opposite end of slots so the round portion hangs over edge I believe when the hood opens the hood edge can pivot down and weight of hood forces the bumper down so it bends. If the round side stays on top of the fender, round edge and fender top takes all the hood load. Bumper lifts the hood edge up slightly off the fender which I think is the purpose of that bumper
