After the end of WW II, how soon did Packard resume full-time car production? Also, what was the first model Packard to come after the War?

as always
Garrett Meadows

PS: I grew up hearing my parents and grandparents talking about "the War," meaning WW II, as such, I still use the term.

Packard commenced production in late 1945 with 2722 vehicles built in the calendar year. These were a continuation of the prewar 20th Series Clippers, identified as 21st Series cars. The first totally new car was the 22nd Series with production beginning (with the convertibles first) in April, 1947 and produced side-by-side with the 21st series for a number of months. If you want more info I suggest reading the 1945 and 1945 annual reports to the stockholders which are available.

It would be hard to tell unless the delivery date was stamped on the patent plate or the VN was extremely low, to my knowledge they were titled as 1946 models.

When planning the Magnum Opus for the 1999 Packard Centennial in Warren, Ohio, Art James went looking for a Packard produced in 1945. He didn't find one, but did manage to put together a display of Packards from every other year of production from 1899 to 1958. Several weeks after the show ended, a PAC member contacted Art with information that his car was produced in late-1945. Too late!

Hi Garrett

The following picture caption, found on page 521 of the Kimes-edited Packard history, second edition states:

"Peacetime production returns to East Grand Boulevard, the first postwar Packard motorcar shown at the body drop - date, October 26th, 1945."
