The "better luck" I would attribute to the distributor getting attention, not to the 160 degree thermostst. 180 t-stats were routine auto parts store replacements in the '50's etc and there were not masses of boiling over problems.

Can you tell us more about the distributor being set on a machine and the settings that were used? I think I need this done also. I read that settings maybe different from Packard settings due to modern gas we are using.
