1937 water pump removal

am I seriously to believe that I have to lift the motor and remove the front engine mount to get the water pump off??

and also...why the hell did Packard cast the pump to where you could not get a socket around the bolt!


there are three bolts holding the pump to the motor....one of the passenger's side upper....passenger's side lower blocked by the motor mount....and driver's lower.

can't get a socket around any of them.

"there are three bolts holding the pump to the motor" - Should be four.

And you should be able to get a socket on the 2 upper bolts without any drama. The bottom 2 can be another matter with an old sagging front engine mount. Loosen the bolts at the bottom of the yoke that bolts to the front crossmember. Jack up the front of the engine using a block of wood between the jack and oilpan. Remember there are other things still attached like exhaust pipe, fuel line, carb linkage so be careful. Anyway, you only have to raise the engine high enough to access the bolts and thats not far. Goodluck.

i'll try my best. I can tell you for having so much room to work and how simple this motor is...it sure is a flippin PITA!

can't tell if it is a 38 pump either. anyone have any idea?

something definitely fishy about that pump. it is NOT a factory 35-37 pump. If it is a later pump, your block would have to have been drilled to accept it, or whats the deal with it only being held on with 3 bolts??? so more than likely, my speculation is its an aftermarket pump with a (failed) ball bearing shaft. I have one of these, and Feltz refused to rebuild it.

But fear not, I have plenty of proper 35-37 pumps, and I know you wouldn't want to miss the experience of rebuilding your own.....we can work out the complex logistics of your getting a pump from me.

and yes, Feltz is the fuel pump master. USPS delivers there too!

the problem with a 37 pump is making the pulley fit on it. the belt is different from stock to run the modern alternator. if the pulley and fan will fit on a 37 pump...then happy day, but I'm not sure if it will. would have to have one in had to compare...or see pictures and measure the bolt holes and the spacing for the belt.


this poor car...shakes head. see my blog for pictures as I already took the pump off. there was indeed 4 bolts as OZ said. doesn't look like anything was drilled in the block.

usps is indeed capable, but then I wouldn't get to drive down with my lady and pass through Dublin canning plant and the car museum and get to show this weird ass thing to Feltz myself. I have to call him first to make sure he will be there when I come. its only 1.5 hours to drive there. non the less...usps may take the baton.

This is a 38-47 style pump, completely different from 35-37. that means the motor has been changed. It is also not a Packard factory type pump, it is an off brand and does not look like a Packard factory or most aftermarket pump.

As far a swearing at Packard Engineering for the difficult to remove bolts try looking inward and examining why you have not changed the 70 year old motor mounts which are at least 50 years beyond their service life.

From what I understand motor is not original, but is the proper number for a 138CD. I'll have to find it. Pretty sure it is a 37 motor. What the heck do I know though. But I have written documents from my grandfather saying motor was replaced. Motor is the same as when my grandfather had the car. Before that I have no idea.

And for the love of God Fred... I just got the damn car the first of the year. I know hardly any of the history other then 90-93 and even then I was 12 and I only have old VHS tapes and papers to go off of. For all I know the motor mount rubber was new within the last 23 years. On top of that I have never worked on any Packard beyond the 55.
