If your car has the final design cap and its corresponding oil fill tube (and tube is oriented properly in the block) there is a stamped slot like depression in the tube in which a "bump" on the cap slides into. In that combination the cap only fits one way and the slot does face forward towards the tube.

Only used on the 356 which is quite different internally from the later 288/327 blocks and apparently even from the smaller prewar blocks. There must be enough of a pathway around the valve guides and not that many places where rust can form so that the extra forced air provided by the tube wasn't needed on those other engines.

That air draft tube is also not used on all 356 engines; the 22nd/23rd series 356 engines did not use it.
