1937 camshaft nut locking washer

putting the timing chain on the 37. go to put the locking washer on before the camshaft nut. there is a woodruff key cut out in the locking washer....but the woodruff key that holds the cam gear does not engage the lock washer.

pulled the gear off...put on the locking washer and the hole in the washer is not large enough to fit over the camshaft gear shaft to even come close to engaging the woodruff key.

the only thing I can think of is that I'm missing a woodruff key that slides into the camshaft gear and then engages this lock washer. but I don't remember seeing that.

without that washer being locked in place via the woodruff key...it is useless to even use it to lock the nut.

I only see a #9 woodruff (whitney) key in the parts book, which is what holds the camshaft gear. no other part number for anything that holds the lock washer for the camshaft nut.

thoughts?

there is no way that slot is fitting into any woodruff key. I sat there and studied it.

I went ahead and torqued that cam nut down really good and bent the tabs over on the lock washer.

I don't see how that lock washer works unless it is anchored, but I guess either Packard knows something I don't or I'm missing something.

timing cover hasn't been put on yet, just the backing plate, so if anyone knows...please do tell the secret of the mysterious woodruff key slot in the washer.

Is there any clearance or extra space in the cam sprocket slot? If so, any chance that is the type locking ring that has a tang bent at 90 degrees? The tangs on those locking rings went inside a slot or hole to keep the ring stationary. Could the tang have broken off?

problem resolved. cut new tab and bent to 90 and popped it on and I'm done with that now. boom.
