Vacuum assist clutch

My 1932 has a vacuum assist clutch, but the operation manual says nothing about it. It also works as a freewheeling device according to Robert Turnquist's book. Does anybody know how this operates? Can I push the red knob on the steering wheel and shift gears without using the clutch pedal?

As a co-incidence, or is that d?j? vu all over again, this recent Hemmings article included a '32 Buick with "the Wizard Control system", ie a vacuum-operated automatic clutch with freewheeling.

BDC, if you really want to take good care of your 32, you need to get a copy of the Service Letters. The images below were scanned from my bound copy which didn't open far enough without breaking the binding to get a full scan, were it me I'd buy the reprint set from PAC.

Note it's more than a vacuum assist clutch, its a semi-automated clutch, a very early version of Electromatic. As OZ indicatged, quite a few auto makers had such devices in this time period.
