Need 1937 Packard Super 8 Differential (Loud Whine @ 40+ mph)

My 1937 Packard Super 8 has a Phil Bray 4.07:1 ring and pinion (cir. 2007) installed by a prior owner, but it was not properly calibrated when it was installed. Now the car has a pretty loud whine from the rear end at 40mph+. Adjusting the backlash has no effect on the noise. The differential had about 2,000 miles on it when I bought it 3 years ago, and I've only driven it about 200 miles since.

Does anyone have a very good condition differential / ring and pinion for my 1937 Packard Super 8? I am looking for a pristine original 1) ring & pinion (matched set), 2) a complete differential carrier, or 3) a new Phil Bray high speed gear set. Note: I spoke with Carol Bray over the summer, and she does not have any more senior high speed gears. Also, Ed Linn hasn't responded to let me know if his gears have been produced yet.

I don't usually comment anymore on this stuff, but I'll make an exception in your case.

Differential whine indicates improper pinion depth and the manual doesn't talk about this aspect.

You need to get some gear contact paint and a driveline manual from the library or whatever and combine that with the Packard manual.

Or you can take the unit out and bring it to a driveline shop.

In other words (to borrow Howard Hugh's favorite expression) there may not be anything wrong with those gears.

Tim & Packards42 - thank you. I have a friend who is going to set me up with a 4.69:1 differential from a 1937 Packard Super Eight (the original ratio for my car). Tim Stone, a master mechanic in Indiana who works on many, many Classics/Packards in his spare time, is working on my car right now. Two years ago, Tim looked at my differential to check on the gear whine. Either my car's rear end wasn't set up right to begin with (which can permanently ruin hypoid gears), or I had bad gears to start with - I have heard several stories of this.

If I ever tour my car in the future, I'll try to find a high-speed ring and pinion set to put in my car (if I ever find one), or just install a Gear Vendors unit.

Packards42 thank you very much for the offer.

I might be interested for my 1940 limo. If we can determine if it is the same ratio. Price, and shipping?
Thanks Todd
