I don't know if it's ever been tried on a gas tank or even if it would be cost effective but perhaps metal spraying would fix it more quickly. I've used this process on crank shaft journals but have no idea how it might work on sheet metal.

I was thinking using a penny, but it would have to be an old penny not these new copper coated ones.
