...There is a torque spec on the bolts, if it still leaks after that much torque your problem is elsewhere...

it may be too much torque that deforms the housing! you should check if it is plain with a piece of steel or glas before, I had to hammer a lot on my outlet to get it plain again after the whole engine went rusty and ugly by the leaking.

Yes, the ears on the housing are bent downward from being tightened many times over the years. If you sit the housing on any good flat surface you will see it. Clamp the housing in a vise by the ear. Give the housing a good yank or tap it with a block of wood and a hammer so that the ear bends upward slightly. Do the same with the other ear. It does not matter if the ears are up slightly as they will pull down again as you tighten the bolts. The main thing is that the diameter around the water opening will press firmly into the gasket.

So I fixed it after the fifth try and when they sold me the correct product. I used Permatex number two non-hardening sealant. There was a crack on the inside of the housing that recently surfaced so I bought J-B Weld put it on the inside and outside and all leaks stopped. Hey, what could go wrong......did. Now my girl is ready to drive again.

I also made a hole in the gasket slightly larger to go around the thermostat.

The gasket does not "go around" the thermostat. The thermostat
is about 3/4" above the bottom surface of the t-stat housing/cylinder head surface. It is retained by a wire retainer. Perhaps you are using a larger incorrect t-stat whose flange is at the joint between the head surface and the t-stat housing??. If so it will not perform as designed

As wonderful and useful stuff as it is, your JB Weld may not be a permanent repair, remember that the cooling system operates under pressure.

Oops that is the way it was when I took it off. There was no ring to hold it. It was that way for many years. It was resting directly on the cylinder head hole. Are you sure it should be up into the housing on this car?
