It's a little-known fact that after her long run as a Packard automobile mascot, the Goddess of Speed briefly graced the front of Duncan's Donuts delivery trucks, until a copyright infringement put both Duncan's and the Goddess out of business.

You can make a lot of really neat things from the parts left over after you rebuild your engine ...

Radiator caps are always interesting to study. For those with an interest, here's the cover page from Werner Gubitz's design patent for one of the many versions of the Goddess of Speed. And just to round out the picture a little, the design patents for Daphne (sliding boy) and the Ring of Fire, and a pix of the real things.

Unfortunately, it is a lost art. I always thought Packards sported a swan because it looked so graceful and I knew what beautiful birds swans were. Disappointed to find out it was supposed to be a pelican.

I thought it was a comorant, (not that it is any more elegant than a pelican).

The bird on the Packard coat of arms is described as
"A Pelican in her Piety". Who invented Cormorant? Which is a particularly ugly bird.

I always felt sorry for the kid sitting on top of the radiator cap. Talk about getting hot seat!

That weird looking mascot with the circle and rays (?) through it kind of reminds me of the mascot on my Clipper, which always makes me think of a satellite ...
